Develop a Climate Transition Action Plan
Climate transition action plans (CTAPs) are action-oriented roadmaps for companies to follow as they proceed on their net zero goals. Not only do transition plans demonstrate that a company is committed to reaching their climate targets, but they also provide a forward-looking tool to share with investors, stakeholders and the public to demonstrate how your company will take ambitious and innovative climate action focusing on sustainability of the company for years to come.
Climate transition action plans (CTAPs) detail the forward-looking, specific, and near-term actions a company is taking to cut emissions at pace to reach its climate goals and share this information in a non-technical, easily digestible, and public-facing way. CTAPs are now best practice for corporate sustainability, helping to address the need for clarity as companies move from setting targets to meeting their goals.
CTAPs —known as climate transition action plans, climate transition plans, transition plans, etc. —have emerged as a framework to equip corporate planning and share key details of those plans with companies’ stakeholders: investors, NGOs, governments, and the public.
To enable more companies to create credible climate transition action plans, We Mean Business Coalition, CDP, Ceres, and EDF worked with Ramboll Consulting to produce consolidated guidance on what a climate transition action plan should include, with actionable templates and checklists. The following Action Steps will help guide you through this checklist as you create your company’s own individual CTAP by providing guidance and examples for an effective transition plan:
- Action Step 1: Establish the Foundations of a CTAP
- Action Step 2: Create an Emissions Reduction Strategy
- Action Step 3: Integrate a CTAP into Core Business Strategy
- Action Step 4: Define Metrics to Drive Progress
- Action Step 5: Align Advocacy Efforts
- Action Step 6: Plan for a Just Transition
- Action Step 7: Embed Nature Positive for Climate Action
- Action Step 8: Disclose a CTAP and Track Progress
The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) is a nonprofit working to develop the gold standard for private sector transition plans. While operating in the UK, the TPT framework is rapidly being adopted globally. The guidance provided in the following Action Steps aligns recommendations with TPT guidance and builds upon the guidance outlined in the EDF and We Mean Business’s Climate Transition Plan Report, as well as the Ceres’ Blueprint for Implementing a Leading Climate Transition Action Plan Report.
